Tears, Tributes and Soul-Stirring Hymns as Celestial Church Honours AMSE Olaitan Balogun at Service of Songs

Lagos service celebrates the life, faith and enduring legacy of the pioneer Head of the USA National Diocese

It was an evening of tears, heartfelt tributes, soul-stirring hymns and solemn reflection as family members, friends, clerics and congregants of the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide gathered on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, to celebrate the life and honour the memory of Assistant Most Superior Evangelist Olaitan Aderemi Balogun (JP, MPIC), the late pioneer Head of the USA National Diocese of the church.

Held between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Imperial Hall, Otunba Jobifele Way, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, the Service of Songs was a deeply moving evening that brought together people whose lives had been touched by the departed cleric’s faith, humility, discipline, generousity and unwavering devotion to God and the Celestial Church of Christ.

As mourners gathered to pay their last respects, the atmosphere was heavy with grief, yet illuminated by the Christian hope of eternal life. It was a gathering of people united not only by the pain of losing a beloved father, husband, brother, spiritual leader and friend, but also by gratitude for a life devoted to the service of God and humanity.

A life celebrated in hymns and remembrance

The Central Choir of the Celestial Church of Christ delivered a memorable rendition of soul-stirring hymns that gave expression to the emotions of the evening. Their melodious voices filled the hall, creating an atmosphere of worship, solemnity and spiritual reflection.

Each hymn seemed to speak to the reality of the moment: the frailty of human existence, the inevitability of death, the comfort of divine promises and the enduring hope of resurrection through Jesus Christ.

For many in attendance, the music was more than a sequence of familiar church hymns. It was a spiritual expression of grief, an offering of thanksgiving for a life well spent and a reminder that, in the Christian faith, death does not have the final word.

As the choir ministered, mourners were drawn into moments of quiet reflection, with the hymns stirring memories of the departed evangelist and the legacy of service he leaves behind.

The story of a remarkable journey of faith

Born on June 20, 1962, in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Balogun’s life was a journey that took him from his formative years in Nigeria to Canada and, eventually, the United States, where he became an influential figure in the Celestial Church of Christ.

He was the fourth of five children of the late Pa Joshua Adeyemi Balogun and Mrs Abeke Omonunde Balogun. His early education at Apostolic Church Primary School, Ebute Metta, and Apostolic Church Grammar School, Ketu, was followed by a period at the Nigerian Defence Academy between 1981 and 1984. He subsequently worked at the Tinubu Square branch of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International before travelling to Canada in 1990.

His journey in the Celestial Church of Christ took him through different communities and parishes, reflecting a life increasingly shaped by faith, service and spiritual commitment.

In Canada, he worshipped at Brigham Parish in Quebec from 1992 to 1994. He later travelled to Chicago with Baba Aro for the annual convention at St Michael Parish in July 1994. Following his return to Boston, Massachusetts, he eventually found his way back to St Michael Parish before moving to Oshoffa Parish.

From Oshoffa Parish, he was posted to Indianapolis as Shepherd-in-Charge, marking the beginning of a more prominent chapter in his ecclesiastical service. He later became Shepherd of Chicago I Parish before stepping out in faith to establish Celestial Church of Christ Rehoboth Parish.

His dedication and commitment earned him further responsibilities, including appointment as State Supervisor. During the period of the Central Church Council, when the USA Diocese was restructured, he assumed responsibility for Region B.

In 2022, he made history as the pioneer Head of the USA National Diocese, attaining the rank of Assistant Most Superior Evangelist and becoming a member of the Pastor-in-Council. He faithfully led the diocese until his passing.

These milestones formed an important part of the story celebrated at the Service of Songs: the story of a man whose journey of faith culminated in a position of significant responsibility within the worldwide church.

A father, a servant and a spiritual leader remembered

Beyond his ecclesiastical titles and achievements, Balogun was remembered as a devoted family man whose life was shaped by humility, discipline, generosity and concern for others.

His biography recounts a cherished pilgrimage to the Holy Places in Israel in 2024, when he became a Jerusalem Pilgrim. Even as illness later confronted him, his commitment to his faith remained an enduring feature of his life.

He passed away in Lagos on September 2, 2026, at the age of 64. His remains were subsequently returned to the United States, enabling members of the Celestial Church of Christ across diocesan affiliations to pay their final respects.

He is survived by his loving wife, Iyanuloluwa Balogun (née Nunayon), his son, Samuel Balogun, his daughter, Elizabeth, extended family members and a wide community of spiritual brethren.

For the family, the Service of Songs was an opportunity to celebrate a husband and father whose influence extended beyond the walls of the family home. For the church, it was a moment to honour a trusted leader whose service helped shape the development of the USA National Diocese. For his friends and associates, it was a time to remember a man whose life and personal qualities left lasting impressions.

Tributes that spoke from the heart

Tributes formed a poignant part of the evening, as the life and legacy of the departed evangelist were recalled in words that brought memories flooding back and emotions to the surface.

The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on his years of service, his contribution to the growth of the church in the United States and the personal relationships he cultivated throughout his lifetime.

Every tribute added another dimension to the portrait of a man who had served in different capacities, built spiritual communities and carried the responsibilities of leadership with a deep sense of duty.

The grief of the moment was inseparable from the recognition that Balogun’s influence would endure through the people he mentored, the congregations he served, the family he nurtured and the institutions to which he devoted his life.

Although the loss was deeply felt, the testimonies and recollections offered comfort, reminding mourners that a life devoted to God is measured not only by the years lived but also by the faith demonstrated, the burdens carried and the lives touched.

A church united in honour and gratitude

The presence of members of the Balogun family, clerics and congregants from different parts of the Celestial Church of Christ community underscored the significance of the departed evangelist’s contribution to the church.

The printed programme identified His Eminence, Reverend E.M.F. Oshoffa, Pastor and Spiritual Head of the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide, among the officiating ministers, alongside other senior church leaders and shepherds serving in Nigeria, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Their participation reflected the importance attached to honouring a man who had risen through the ranks of the church to become the first Head of the USA National Diocese.

The gathering also demonstrated the bonds of fellowship that transcend geographical boundaries within the worldwide church. Though Balogun’s ministry had taken him across continents, his final homecoming in death brought together people connected by a common faith and a shared appreciation of his service.

For the Celestial Church of Christ, his passing represents the loss of a dedicated minister and pioneer leader. Yet the institutions he helped build and the example he left behind remain part of his enduring contribution.

An evening of farewell, faith and hope

As the Service of Songs drew to a close, the prevailing emotions were those of sorrow, gratitude and hope. The evening had provided a fitting opportunity to mourn, to remember and to celebrate a life that had made a meaningful impact on family, church and community.

The appreciation message in the programme, issued on behalf of the Balogun family and the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide, expressed profound gratitude to Reverend E.M.F. Oshoffa, the clergy, members of the USA National Diocese and the wider church community for their prayers, presence, messages of sympathy and support during the period of mourning.

The family acknowledged the comfort drawn from the solidarity of those who stood with them, while praying for God’s continued blessings and safe journeys for all who had travelled to honour their departed loved one.

The Service of Songs was more than a farewell ceremony. It was a celebration of faith, a testimony to the enduring power of service and a reminder that the true measure of a life lies in the legacy it leaves behind.

Assistant Most Superior Evangelist Olaitan Aderemi Balogun may have departed this earthly realm, but the memory of his ministry, his devotion to God and his contribution to the Celestial Church of Christ will remain alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

As the final hymns faded and mourners prepared to depart, one message remained clear: while death brings physical separation, a life of faith and service leaves behind memories that time cannot easily erase.

Rest in perfect peace, Assistant Most Superior Evangelist Olaitan Aderemi Balogun (JP, MPIC). Your earthly race is over, but your legacy of faith and service endures. Amen.
