DON’T PUT MOTHER CELESTIAL CELINE OSHOFFA ON TRIAL OVER A PHOTOGRAPH

A photograph of a moment of assistance must not be turned into an indictment of a woman whose role has been that of a supportive wife and mother in the Celestial family.

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa: Don’t put her on trial

The social media controversy surrounding Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa, the dutiful wife of the Pastor and Spiritual Head of the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide, His Eminence Reverend Pastor Emmanuel Mobiyina Oshoffa, raises important questions about fairness, responsible commentary and the dangers of drawing sweeping conclusions from a single photograph.

A photograph reportedly taken shortly before an anointment exercise at a Celestial Church of Christ parish, during the ongoing pastoral working visit of Reverend E.M.F Oshoffa, has become the basis of accusations that Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa usurped the spiritual authority of her husband and personally performed the sacred exercise of anointing members.

Such a serious allegation deserves more than speculation. It demands careful examination of what the photograph actually depicts, the circumstances surrounding the moment and the distinction between assisting a worshipper in preparation for an ecclesiastical exercise and performing that exercise itself.

Helping a church member adjust her cap is not the same thing as administering anointment.

That distinction is central to this controversy, and it should not be lost in the rush to condemn.

THE PICTURE DOES NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY

This picture certainly does not tell the whole story…

From the account of the incident, Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa was helping a female member adjust her cap in preparation for anointment. The photograph, however, has been interpreted by some bloggers and church members as evidence that she had taken over the responsibility of the Pastor and Spiritual Head.

But where, in the photograph, is the conclusive evidence that she administered the anointing oil?

According to the description of the scene, the clergyman carrying the bowl containing the anointing oil was not standing close to Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa at the moment captured. Neither was her hand visibly dripping with anointing oil. These details do not, by themselves, establish everything that happened before or after the photograph was taken. They do, however, underline the danger of treating a single image as conclusive proof of an alleged breach of church protocol.

A photograph captures a moment. It does not necessarily explain the events leading up to it, the purpose of an action or what happened immediately afterwards.

It is therefore unfair to transform an image of a woman apparently helping a worshipper into definitive proof that she performed a sacred rite reserved for the appropriate ecclesiastical authority.

If there is evidence beyond the photograph, those making the allegation should present it fairly and in its proper context. Until then, conclusions should not be allowed to outrun the available evidence.

ANOINTMENT IS SACRED — AND MOTHER CELESTIAL CELINE OSHOFFA KNOWS IT

Nobody familiar with the spiritual traditions of the Celestial Church of Christ should underestimate the significance of anointment.

It is a solemn religious exercise that must be approached with reverence and in accordance with the Church’s established order. It is not a casual activity in which roles and responsibilities can be assumed at will.

MC Celine Oshoffa: She knows that anointment is sacred

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa, having lived within the life and traditions of the Celestial Church of Christ and being married to its worldwide spiritual leader, is well acquainted with the importance attached to this sacred exercise.

Those who know her and have observed her conduct in Nigeria point out that she does not ordinarily place herself in the midst of an ongoing anointment exercise. Her reported action in the photograph in question therefore, needs to be understood in the context presented by those familiar with the incident: she was assisting a female worshipper in getting ready before the Pastor commenced the exercise.

There is an important difference between helping a woman prepare for a religious ceremony and assuming the authority to conduct that ceremony.

The two should not be conflated.

If the Church has prescribed procedures governing preparation for anointment, those procedures should guide any assessment of the incident. But a person should not be pronounced guilty of violating those procedures merely because a photograph has been circulated with a particular interpretation attached to it.

Respect for sacred traditions must go hand in hand with respect for truth.

SUPPORTING THE PASTOR IS NOT USURPING HIS AUTHORITY

L-R: E.M.F & MC Celine Oshoffa, a dutiful and supportive wife

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa is widely regarded by those who know the family as a pillar of strength and support to her husband. Her position as the wife of the Pastor and Spiritual Head places her in a unique position within the worldwide Celestial family, but that position should neither be exaggerated nor unfairly diminished.

Being a supportive wife does not automatically confer ecclesiastical authority. Equally, performing a simple act of assistance does not automatically amount to an attempt to exercise authority that belongs to the Pastor.

There is a world of difference between supporting a husband in the discharge of his responsibilities and attempting to take over those responsibilities.

The former is a natural expression of partnership and service. The latter is a serious allegation that requires credible evidence.

It is precisely because the spiritual leadership of the Celestial Church of Christ is important that allegations of usurpation should be treated with the seriousness they deserve. Such claims should not be casually attached to an individual on the strength of a photograph whose meaning is open to interpretation.

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa should not have to be portrayed as a rival to her husband’s spiritual office simply because she was seen helping a female member prepare for an exercise that was about to take place.

There is no necessary contradiction between a wife supporting her husband and the husband retaining full responsibility for his spiritual office.

THE DANGER OF TRIAL BY SOCIAL MEDIA

The speed with which images circulate on social media has created a troubling culture in which people can be judged before the facts are established.

A photograph is posted. An interpretation is attached. The interpretation becomes a claim. Before long, the claim is repeated so frequently that some begin to treat it as established fact.

In this process, context is often the first casualty, while the reputation of the person concerned becomes collateral damage.

Criticism must be anchored in facts, not conjecture.

Religious institutions are not immune to this problem. Indeed, because their leaders and members are held to high spiritual and moral expectations, allegations involving sacred rites can spread with particular intensity.

That makes restraint even more important.

Those who have criticised Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa should ask themselves some fundamental questions. Did they witness the entire incident, or did they see only a photograph? Do they possess independent evidence that she actually administered the anointing oil? Have they established that the action captured in the image violated an applicable church rule? Or have they simply accepted an interpretation circulated by someone else?

These are not unreasonable questions. They are the minimum standards of responsible commentary.

Criticism is not inherently wrong, and no individual should be placed beyond legitimate scrutiny. But criticism must be anchored in facts, not conjecture. Where the evidence is incomplete, the responsible course is to seek clarification rather than pronounce judgment.

The Church must not allow speculation to become a substitute for evidence, nor should social media become a court in which reputations are damaged without a fair hearing.

A CALL TO THE CELESTIAL FAMILY

The Celestial Church of Christ is a spiritual family with a rich heritage, sacred practices and an established leadership structure. Its members have a collective responsibility to preserve not only its doctrines and traditions but also the spirit of love, fairness and mutual respect that should characterise Christian fellowship.

The Bible admonishes believers in John 7:24: “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

The principle is particularly relevant to the controversy surrounding Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa. An appearance, without sufficient context, is not always an accurate representation of the truth.

Ephesians 4:29 also urges believers to speak in ways that build others up rather than cause needless harm. This does not mean that wrongdoing should be concealed or that legitimate concerns should be ignored. It means that words should be measured, claims should be substantiated and the dignity of others should be respected.

If any member has a genuine concern about the conduct of a church official or the observance of a sacred rite, the appropriate channels within the Church should be used to seek clarification. Where necessary, the Church’s competent authorities can establish what happened and determine whether any rule was breached.

That is a more constructive path than circulating accusations that may prove unfounded.

The objective should be truth, not humiliation; clarification, not character assassination; and the preservation of the Church’s spiritual integrity, not the escalation of division.

MOTHER CELESTIAL CELINE OSHOFFA DESERVES FAIRNESS

At the heart of this matter is a simple but important principle: no person should be condemned for an act that has not been established by credible evidence.

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa deserves the same presumption of fairness that should be extended to every member of the Church. Her marriage to the Pastor and Spiritual Head should not make her immune to legitimate questions, but neither should it make her an easy target for insinuations about her motives or conduct.

A woman helping another woman adjust her cap before a religious exercise should not, without further evidence, be portrayed as having taken over the spiritual office of her husband.

The photograph may have raised questions for some observers. Those questions can be addressed through context, facts and, if necessary, an authoritative explanation from the relevant church officials. What should not happen is the conversion of an ambiguous image into a definitive verdict.

No person should be condemned for an act that has not been established by credible evidence.

The Church’s sacred traditions deserve protection. Its leadership deserves respect. Its members deserve truthful information. And those who serve within its fold deserve to be treated with fairness.

Let the facts speak. Let wisdom prevail. Let the sacred traditions of the Celestial Church of Christ be defended without injustice to any individual.

Mother Celestial Celine Oshoffa should not be judged by an interpretation of a photograph alone. Until credible evidence establishes otherwise, the responsible course is to refrain from presenting the allegation that she usurped her husband’s spiritual authority as a proven fact.

In a Church founded on faith, reverence and the pursuit of spiritual truth, fairness must remain part of our testimony.

Truth without malice. Correction without humiliation. Faith without needless division.

May the Holy Spirit guide the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide, strengthen the hands of its spiritual leadership and preserve the unity of the Celestial family. Amen.
