MAKOKO HARVEST: CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF CELESTIAL CHURCH OF CHRIST IN NIGERIA

History is often remembered through kings, cities and monuments. Yet God sometimes chooses places the world scarcely notices to accomplish His purposes. Makoko was one of such places. Long before it became the National Headquarters of the Celestial Church of Christ in Nigeria, Makoko was a quiet fishing community along the Lagos lagoon. It was a modest settlement where fishermen, traders and families lived simple lives, unaware that God was preparing it for an extraordinary purpose.

To many, Makoko was just another waterside community. To God, it was the cradle of the Celestial Church of Christ in Nigeria. The story of the church did not begin with magnificent buildings or large congregations. It began with ordinary men and women who responded to God’s call. Looking back from seventy five years ago, one truth stands out: God chose ordinary people to accomplish an extraordinary purpose.

One act of faith led to another. Fishermen extended an invitation across the border. A woman donated land after a divine encounter. A prophet crossed the waters into a community he had never visited before. Together, they laid the foundation of a church that would one day reach hundreds of millions.

Today, the Celestial Church of Christ has spread far beyond the shores of Makoko. Yet every great tree has its roots. To understand the church’s strength today, we must return to the people and faith that laid its foundation.

And this exactly what happened on Sunday 2nd August 2026, as the incumbent Pastor and Spiritual Head of the Celestial Church of Christ Worldwide, His Eminence, Reverend Emmanuel Mobiyina Oshoffa, led teeming members of the fold from far and near to the National Headquarters of the world’s largest white garment church, C.C.C Worldwide, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary and Annual Adult Harvest Thanksgiving Service of the fold.

In the words of the Shepherd in Charge of the C.C.C National Headquarters Archdiocese Cathedral, Makoko, AMSE Afis Kiki, “Seventy five is a milestone to thank God for, and at the same time remember to appreciate the mercy upon the TOFIN who came from GBAJI in the Republic of Benin (the fishermen) to establish a branch of the church at Makoko village, namely: Leader Samuel François, Leader Leyon, Johannesburg,and also Pierre Gisu who later joined them, the late Spo and Moses Adjovi, who volunteered to be Papa Oshoffa’s Personal Assistant in Nigeria, and they both travelled to Lagos during the Passion Week in 1951. We celebrate those fathers of Celestial faithwith one minute silence.

Celestial Church of Christ, National Headquarters, Makoko, has given birth to countless cathedrals across the globe. This humble historical background and divinely inspired beginning compels us all to trust God alone for our ministerial endeavours in His name.“
